Celtic squad stories – An summary of recent team news

So it’s been fairly quiet with all things Celtic recently with that new club across the city stealing most of the headlines so I thought I would do a quick summary of Celtic squad news from over the last week.

Samaras want’s to Greece a reason to party

For those of us watching the Euro’s I’m sure you’ll know Samaras is the only Celtic player in the quarter finals after Greece finished second in Group A with a 1-0 win over Russia.

Sammy said: “We don’t play for ourselves, but for 11 million people who are hoping for us to do something worthwhile, so that they can get out in the streets to celebrate.

Sammy and the rest of the Greek squad will have a tough time in the quarter finals though where they will play favourites Germany on Friday.

Best of luck to Greece, I know we’ll all be watching.

Lustig likely to miss season start

Defender Mikael Lustig looks likely to miss the start of the season to undergo surgery on his hip.

Lustig played a part in Swedens Euro 2012 campaign and said he had been playing through the pain barrier. He said: “I feel numb. I have had problems with my hip for a while.”

Lustig has had a slow start to his Celtic career. After joining in January he’s been blighted with injury and only managed 4 appearances in the Hoops.

Get well soon Mikael
Midfielders on the move?

It seems that two of our midfielders are gaining admirers and possibly bids for there services from other clubs. The players in question are Ki Sung-yueng and Victor Wanyama.

Sky Sports reported that Russian’s Rubin Kazan had an offer in the region of £6m rejected from Celtic for the 23 year-old. They also reported that an improved bid is likely, while there remains interest from the English Premier League.

Meanwhile there is a lot of interest from England in Wanyama who is back in Kenya for there World Cup qualifier with Togo. Liverpool, QPR and Stoke City are a few of the clubs that have been linked with the 20 year-old

When asked about a possible move Wanyama said “At this point I have no comment on the many bids. My concentration is with Kenya. We have to focus as we have a tough game against Togo.”
Champions open against Aberdeen

The SPL fixtures are out and Celtic will open against Aberdeen at Celtic Park on 4 August where we will unfurl the champions flag.

We have a game sheduled for 11 Aug at Celtic Park against Dundee United but we will instead play Real Madrid in a friendly that same night with the SPL agreeing to reschedule the match.

22 September we play ‘Club 12’ at home, although we shall need to wait until 4 July to find out who exactly ‘Club 12’ will be, most likely either NewCo Rangers or Divison 1 side Dundee.
No closer on keeper

With Fraser Forster still stalling on a permnament contract with Celtic rumour has it Neil Lennon has started looking at replacements.

Celtic have agreed a £2m deal with Newcastle United but the big Geordie has yet to put pen to paper and complete the transfer.

Other targets Neil has apparently sounded out are Craig Gordon, who left Sunderland in the summer, and also Greece international goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis.

Both player are available on a free transfer.
